When somebody gets home after a long day, they usually empty their pockets and dump their stuff on the closest table around. There’s a slight chance that they’re carrying around your business card that they had picked up earlier that day.
What’s going to make sure that they look at it instead of throwing it out?
TIP #1
Start with Bright Colors (even white)
There’s a reason almost every single paper product is white… it’s attractive! Paper towels, copy paper and even toilet paper aren’t naturally white, it’s bleached to catch your eye. Of course, don’t limit yourself to white by any means. Reds, oranges and bright greens are great candidates because these colors are embedded into our brains to be extremely important (those are traffic signals by the way if you didn’t catch that).
TIP #2
Familiar Shapes
A gigantic plethora of swirls and exploding designs is awesome, but not quite familiar to everyone. If you’re looking to sell your design, try keeping structurally sound shapes like circles and squares as the foundation.
TIP #3
Large Font, Large Impact
If you keep the font at a boring Times New Roman and at the same size throughout the entire design, there’s a good chance somebody will take one look at it ad go, “Ugh, too much reading”. Even in this blog post you can notice that each “TIP” is bold and blue and I have little 3 word (or so) bold phrases to paraphrase what I’m writing right this second to hopefully grab your attention. Is it working? It must be ![]()
TIP #4
Keep it Accessible
Let’s say you have a business card or a flyer that you’re handing out. The goal is to convince whoever receives your print to hang onto it and take advantage of the information on there. Somebody is much more likely to hang onto your business card if it’s a convenient 2″ x 3.5″ or a flyer that’s not the size of a billboard.
TIP #5
Brilliant and Sturdy Printing
Have you ever shook somebody’s hand that felt like it was from a dead guy? Imagine handing out a business card that feels like a napkin. While making sure things are sturdy, also keep in mind that a glossy print will reflect and stand out on a pile of papers.
Let the great designs flow!
